description One leading aspiration in the new competitiveness plans that the French automotive industry has implemented since the beginning of the recession is to modify the workforce’s working times and availability demands in order to meet the requirements of a market in crisis. The example of the PSA-Mulhouse factory is used to see how the implementation of an “overtime” system has transformed both the way workers use their time outside of work and their attitudes towards predictability and availability. It also shows what kinds of effects the system has on industrial conflicts and to what extent it constitutes a new battlefield in modern industrial workplaces.
