description Born as a slave, Toussaint Louverture, after having won his freedom, led the revolt of his people against the oppression of the chains and the colonial violence from the French Empire, reaffirming through struggle the inalienable right of humans to freedom. After joining the French Revolution, he freed Saint-Domingue from the Spanish and English occupation and offered a progressive Constitution to his people. Betrayed by the Emperor Bonaparte who was not faithful to his word and refused to accept the course of history, Louverture was jailed in a gloomy prison on Jura where he ended his existence dedicated to the protection of the dignity of those of humble origins. Nonetheless, he bequeathed to the new continent an example of emancipation acquired through struggle, making of Haiti the first independent nation of Latin America.
