The purpose of this article is to highlight the paradoxes of this occupation, which symbolises both a privileged career opportunity for women in the male-dominated fields of advertising and marketing, and a highly patriarchal value system. Our contribution sheds new light on domestic education in Switzerland, which, as in other fields, is best known for its conservatism, and reflects current international research on the subject. Based on unpublished archives from the multinational Nestlé and two former industrial home economists, our study also documents the transnational links that underpin the emergence of the profession in Switzerland. |
