| Summary: | The production of the virtues by the early education depicted in R. II 376e2-III 412b7 is required to provide a definition of these virtues in IV 441d5-e3 and 442b11-d3. In VII 521d13-522b3, this early education of the guardians is summarized in such terms that lead to question its capacity to really generate the virtues and even to be preliminary of the second education, which is mentioned in VII 531d7-532b5. The early education is not less defective than the Athenian education, whose insufficiency is established by Adimantus in II 362e1-367e5 and which is apparently reformed by the characters, who have not received any other education. The analysis of the metaphor involved in the word τύπος supports the critical examination of the early education, which happens to be circular : it depends on the results which it is supposed to garantee. The criticism of this curriculum takes the form of an elenchos, which the characters, by making him raise objections, lead the reader to carry out. This elenchos educates the reader who is made aware of another meaning of the text and puts on the way to the second education. The reader realizes that the early education refers to the internal dialogue or critical examination that it suggests to its recipients. The early education, being submitted to refutation, becomes the instrument of a purification, capable as such to generate indirectly the lacking virtues. |
