Long-term skin disorders such as ichthyosis can prevent the skin from producing enough Vitamin D, leading to deficiencies and issues with bone health. This report highlights the need to take Vitamin D insufficiency and its sequelae into account in clinical care by presenting a case of genu valgum in a patient with lamellar ichthyosis. Similar correlations have also been shown in earlier research, underscoring the necessity of continuing to monitor and educate patients with chronic skin problems about their bone health.
Case Report:
A 15-year-old Indian boy came to the orthopedic outpatient department complaining of lamellar ichthyosis, progressive knee deformity, and trouble walking over the last 6 months, with a recent exacerbation in the previous month. Upon examination, he had bilateral genu valgum, widespread scaly skin lesions, and biochemical indications of Vitamin D insufficiency.
Conclusion:
This case study underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in patients with chronic skin conditions. It also highlights the unusual association between genu valgum and lamellar ichthyosis. It underscores the need for interdisciplinary teamwork in managing difficult patients and influencing pediatric dermatology, orthopedics, and other medical disciplines. It also contributes to research on the relationship between skin conditions and orthopedic problems, aiming to improve patient outcomes and care. |
