description The feminisation of secondary school teaching staff between 1950 and 1980 was particularly evident in French. Can gender as a category of analysis shed light on the developments of this occupational sub-group? In the 1950s, the virulent debate setting defenders of classics against advocates of French and modern literatures took no account of its different implications for men and women. The unequal career prospects between the two sexes received less attention than the hierarchy that placed classics above French and modern literatures. The contents of the discussions concerning over-hauling the teaching of French literature and language confirms the low priority of the gender issue, despite the large proportion of women in this field.
