Summary:Psychiatric patients are least capable of protecting their rights because of their illness. Nurses deal with human rights issues daily, in all aspects of their professional role. To protect the patient rights, the nurses should be made aware of patients rights. The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding the human rights of mentally ill among staff nurses at selected hospitals of Mysore. A quasi experimental- non equivalent pre test - post test control group design was adopted for the study. Proforma for selected personal variables, structured knowledge questionnaire were developed to collect the information and teaching plan was developed for structured teaching programme. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used to select 80 staff nurses, 40 in each experimental and control group. The findings of the study revealed that the structured teaching programme was highly effective educative method in improving the knowledge of staff nurses regarding the human rights of mentally ill. No significant association was found between the pre-test knowledge levels and selected personal variables of staff nurses except for exposure to any other educational programme on human rights of mentally ill.
