description 1-(2', 4'-Dihydroxy-5'-chlorophenyl)-3-arylpropane-1, 3-diones(3a-h) have been synthesized by a simple and convenient method employing Baker-Venkatraman transformation on 2-aroyloxy-4-hydroxy-5-chloroacetophenones (2a-h) with NaOH in dimethylsuphoxide regardless of pyridine. The structures of the synthesized compounds have been assigned on the basis of elemental and spectral analyses (IR, 1HNMR, 13C NMR, Mass). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for the antibacterial efficacy against gram negative and gram positive bacteria.
