| description | This contribution examines the issues of matrimonial separation and marital conflict, limiting the field of investigation to Southern Italy and according to a long-term perspective (16th-18th centuries) which identifies in the Council of Trent and in the period of the Counter-Reformation a crucial moment for the analysis of these topics. A micro-analytical approach capable of reconstructing individual life stories applied to the study of matrimonial trials filed in the diocesan archives of the Apulian and Lucanian provinces gives voice to unpublished female protagonism implemented (with the support of the parental network) in response to marital violence. This analysis outlines the causes underlying the practice of separation quoad thorum and the related judicial procedure, and analyzes the role of the Church in controlling Catholic unions. |
