Description
Summary:The objective of this work is to analyse the access conditions of poor populations to medical care in the Oran’s metropolitan area using both quantitative data and a qualitative approach. Having a better knowledge of social and space inequalities of access to medical care can indeed contribute to sustainable development and to a better quality of life. In this perspective, the paper analyses the characteristics of medical care organisation in the wilaya of Oran according to statistical data of the year 2006. The study shows important inequalities in health infrastructures distribution on this geographical area. Secondly, a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews made it possible to understand the access difficulties to medical care for poor population of the precarious, mostly unplanned, districts of the outskirts. According to this approach, some of the causes and effects of the poorest inhabitants’ health situation are highlighted, as well as the burdens emerge : frequency of health problems, an access to medical care which is limited to the most urgent cases because of the high cost of consultations, the medicine and public transport fares. Furthermore, distance makes it especially painful and difficult for people with fragile health.
