| Summary: | Office-based labs (OBLs) have revolutionized outpatient vascular surgery. The OBL arose in 2003 and was supercharged in 2008 when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services changed their reimbursements to include outpatient procedures. This venue has grown even more so since the COVID pandemic in 2019. OBLs offer a location where physicians and health professionals routinely provide examinations, diagnoses, and treatment of illness or injuries on an ambulatory basis. This provides a place where patients have little wait time, and there is a patient-focused environment in addition to an environment where providers have greater control and accountability over the care provided. This paper will discuss what an OBL is and how a vascular surgery practice can go about creating and setting one up, specifically focusing on setting up a vein center. |
