description After having presented the location logics in the two territories studied, we analyzed the differentiation factors of the Costa Rican and Martinican banana value chains, as to their influence on the environmental impact of the exploitations. This ecological weight is considered from three principal points of view: use of plant health products, erosion, and management of organic and non-organic waste. The comparative method combining existing literature and ground observations, concluded that the environmental consequences of banana value chains are better managed in Martinique. Nevertheless, the study also highlights the much greater fragility of the Martinican insular ecosystem compared with the large plains of the Atlantic area of Costa Rica.
