Description
Summary:This study focuses on the financing of basic education in municipalities of the Bahia State during the period 1997-2001, seeking to analyze the relationship between variations in the level of financial commitment to education among local governments and the achievement on standardized tests of students in municipal school systems. The data pertained to variables indicating municipal receipts and expenditures with respect to basic education during the decade of the 1990s and also to the test scores of students enrolled in the municipal fundamental schools. The results revealed an absence of significant correlations between indicators of municipal financial commitment to education and student achievement. On the other hand, the findings demonstrated that there is a greater variation in levels of financial commitment among the richer municipalities than among the poorer ones. Thus, the data indicate that where there exists a relative power to make decisions about education expenditures, there is a weak positive association between financial commitment and school achievement levels.
