| Summary: | The article is devoted to determining the stages of formation and development of the Muslim cities of Medieval Azerbaijan. The dynamics of development of Muslim cities in Azerbaijan: stages of formation, rise and decline have been determined by the comprehensive study. In the early Islamic period, the fortress cities of Azerbaijan turned into large administrative, handicraft, trade and cultural centers and acquired a common Muslim appearance. During the Seljuk era, fertile conditions for the urban development and urban culture were created, and the creative energy and constructive potential of the Turkic ethnos emerged with new force. In the XI–XII centuries, urbanization processes accelerated, cities reached a high level in both terms of territory and population. The results of the Mongol conquest and domination in different regions of Azerbaijan were not the same. The negative consequences of the Mongol campaigns in South Azerbaijan were quickly eliminated, urban development activities expanded, and the cities developed rapidly. XVI–XVII centuries were the period of stagnation and decline of the medieval Muslim cities of Azerbaijan. The population left the cities, the process of agrarianization of the cities began. The results of this research can be applied in theoretical works on the medieval urban culture of Azerbaijan. |
