Description
Summary:Water supply is becoming challenging day after day due to many factors such as climate change, pollution, and increasing water demand. Reverse osmosis desalination has emerged as a viable solution for providing fresh water in recent years. Batch reverse osmosis configuration has huge potential as an alternative to conventional continuous configuration. While the batch process has many variants, in our work, we study the case of the batch configuration under time-dependent pressure delivering constant permeate flowrate. Our goal is to investigate how different parameters impact energetic performance and production flowrate. Our paper contributes to advancing research in the batch configuration by providing new analytical expression of SEC and an algorithm for numerical simulations. The derived expression and simulation can help understand better the batch configuration specific energy consumption dependency of several parameters, and thus help design batch configurations more efficiently. Our study showed that initial feed tank water volume had no impact on specific energy consumption for all recovery ratios. For a fixed recovery ratio, our work proved linear dependency of specific energy consumption on initial feed salinity. This study proved also the existence of an optimal net differential pressure for minimizing specific energy consumption, and provided its analytical expression.
