description The Arabian Peninsula has over the last few years recently emerged as a place of literary creation. The female Saudi novelist Laylā al‑Juhanī belongs to a new generation of writers, female writers especially, who contribute to the renewal of contemporary Arab literature both in terms of form and content. In Jāhiliyya, she boldly addresses the issues of conservatism and ordinary violence in Saudi Arabia, through the evocation of racism in the kingdom and of the constraints imposed on women. Her writing blurs the lines between literary genres and is a blend of documentary text, intimate writings, drama and narrative, while the novel ends with the frenzied repetition of a poetic verse.
