Summary:The discovery of a prompt book is an important one for early theatre history in that it gives us clues as to how plays were presented near the time of their original production. This article announces the recent discovery of a prompt book at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It is of a play by James Shirley (1596-1666) that has long puzzled scholars in relation to dramatic production – St. Patrick for Ireland – first presented in Dublin 1636-40.
