description Abstract Independent Cultural Centers (ICC) are the forms of activity undertaken mostly by young people (aged 19-46) who are members of associations. Legal personality of such associations allows these groups to obtain a housing base within which individual assumptions contained in their statutes are implemented. Not only the nature (specificity), but also activities of the ICC described in the paper below are similar. The associations undertake cultural and social initiatives related to artistic, recreational and sports aspects. The following work was created on the basis of four active ICC based in Poland, located in Gliwice, Lublin, Warsaw and Wroclaw. The aim of the work is to present the genesis of the phenomenon of ICC, referring to the squat movement and changes resulting from their evolution.
