description This article aims to reflect on the relationships and bonds that residents of two neighboring favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil have established with the neighborhoods in which they are located. Based on the material of four semi-structured interviews, the work seeks to examine how these former residents of the two favelas perceive their movement through the neighborhoods, as related to their ties of employment, affection and belonging. In this work, the focus was taken away from the favelas themselves and placed on the intimate links between them and the neighborhoods in which they are located, highlighting the economic and social intersections, which are determinants for their existence. The present work aims, therefore, to bring empirical elements that contribute to the already old problematization of a dualistic perspective of the city, questioning the myth of the “broken city”.
