description The paper is devoted to the study of competitions for young journalists. At the present stage, they are a popular form of communication between students, journalistic organizations, administrative and commercial structures, and universities. The purpose of this paper is to identify the role, importance, characteristics, typological diversity of media competitions targeted at the school audience, definition of their tasks under the conditions of declining interest of the mass audience to media, as well as the need to improve the quality of public and career guidance with young people. Using the typological method, the author analyzes the functional purpose, as well as a variety of competitions for young journalists. The sociological method makes it possible to identify creative, professional preferences and abilities of the audience interested in journalism. The author distinguishes between the following types of competitions: 1) according to the geographical coverage of participants district, city, oblast (regional), republican, national, international; 2) according to the degree of intensity of the interaction between organizers and participants on-site, off-site, on-site and off-site, virtual; 3) according to the format of organization competition events, competition events with educational functions; 4) according to the periodicity one-time and regular. The specifics of competitions, opportunities and interests of young reporters in the media field are considered based on the All-Russian Competition of Schoolchildren in Journalism, Photojournalism, Advertising, and PR (Rostov-on-Don). The conclusion is made that modern students participating in competitions are attracted mainly by the media environment, as well as by the opportunity to try themselves in the role of media specialists (reporter, photographer, cameraman, presenter, etc.). Furthermore, these competitions demonstrate the level and quality of profession-oriented training of school audience, activate the movement of young reporters, motivate schoolchildren and their mentors to improve their journalistic skills, help schoolchildren to develop abilities and skills that are currently in demand in many professional sectors, and, finally, increase the level of media education of school audience.
