| Summary: | This research initially focused on eight Istanbul Greek translators of Turkish literature now living in Athens who have been acting as cultural brokers between Greek and Turkish societies. Four among them – Iraklis/Herkül Millas, Niki Stavridi, Io Tsokona and Stella Vretou – have published partly autobiographical books in Greece between 2013 and 2019, “translating” the memory of their community in the past century. These books differ in literary form but share a significant narrative stance. While the oppressive situation experienced as a minority and the pains of exile are depicted, the dominant nationalist or conservative narratives in the Greek repertoire on identities and past coexistence are avoided in all books, an aspect notably apparent in the representations of “the Turk”. A form of translator agency might be at work here, within the quest for a narrative voice that preserves dignity both for the ‘Self’ and the ‘Other’. |
