| Summary: | This text is a reflection on material fragilities, grounded in the discussion of two case studies, which look at the reclamation of red mud from bauxite mining in Gardanne and the management of sealed biological samples used in the production of DNA evidence. It shows how a relational approach, sensitive to socio-material interdependencies, highlights the tensions between the residuality of materials, their recovery, and the role of reconditioning work and associated infrastructures. The material fragility of these entities is inseparably physical, technical and symbolic, and shapes the legal and industrial arrangements that seek to capture and enhance these entities. |
