description Drawing on an ethnographic research conducted in two school districts in Benin, this paper deals with class visits and inspections led by pedagogical advisors and inspectors in their assigned primary schools. The article analyzes how said advisors and inspectors take up the task in a context where the visits have been undergoing numerous reforms aiming to turn them into tools for “quality” education. While exploring the bureaucratic constraints, the professional norms and the interactional issues that arise during the visits, the article highlights the multitude of social norms and logics at stake. As indicators of the social order in the school districts, the visits provide perspective on authority relationships between teachers and inspectors, thus bringing new insights into the study of the everyday State.
