| Summary: | This article analyzes the contribution of Jacques Rancière's political theory to understanding relationships between the Internet and democracy. We begin by presenting the basic concepts of his radical theory of democracy. Specifically, his distinction between "the political", "politics", and " police". We strive to deconstruct what is usually, in social scientific literature, identified with empirical forms of online political communication. We conclude by arguing that perspectives rooted in notions of the public sphere which equate political participation with online political dialogue are inadequate for understanding the democratic affordances of digital platforms. |
