description While materials are at the heart of construction issues, an invisible element that we condition, process, recycle and, quite often, forget is also at play: air. This article explores this element, based on ongoing research around objects but also the technological and social environment that is built around air control in architecture. Portraying a range of objects observed in offices or on construction sites, this article reveals the complex interplay of actors who condition the efficiency of an aeraulic system, sometimes to the point of undermining its relevance. After several decades of improvement and technical development, aeraulic engineering in architecture has encountered a framework of challenges in terms of implementation and use. The article thus highlights the paradoxical relationship between the attempt to control a material which is eminently complex to master, grasp and measure, and project implementation conditions that constantly recreate the production context. These fragilities undermine the very idea of control, highlighting the need to spark debate, revive the capacity for attention, and rethink the interaction between air and architecture.
