description The article sets out to explore the engineering work in the field of Micro and Nano Technologies (MNT) visiting a variety of places where technology and society are co-produced: international committees where roadmaps are defined, research labs where new devices are designed, platforms where technological exploration and transfer are performed, big collaborative research programs where researchers and companies shape sociotechnical infrastructures, and places where societal inscription of the novelties is regulated. The concept of “heterogeneous engineering” (Law, 1989) is used in order to explain how engineering practice shapes and transforms the society. The article shows that actor-network theory may deal with a complete sociotechnical transition, from the construction of laboratory projects till their social inscription, without giving up on the idea of “following actors” –especially engineers- and their concrete and situated practices.
