Summary:Background: Tropical rainforests and temperate forests are the ecosystems most affected by land use change. In the state of Oaxaca, there is an annual deforestation rate of 17,796 ha yr-1 due to the expansion of agricultural and livestock areas and human settlements. Objective. To perform a multitemporal analysis of the Magdalena Tequisistlán micro-basin, Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Methodology. To estimate land use cover changes, using high-resolution images. Supervised classification was performed with Quantum Gis® 3.6.0 "Maidenhead" software and the K-Means algorithm was used for atmospheric correction, while concordance and precision were calculated with the Kappa index. Results. The Kappa index was 0.84, which means a high accuracy between the image classification and the observed reality. The area studied is 6,833.92 ha, which was analyzed over a period of 28 years, during which the agricultural areas decreased 256.35 ha with respect to the area of the initial period. Implications. The forest cover of the low deciduous forest decreased 653.56 ha, reflected in the increase of secondary vegetation, which went from 47.6 to 60.1 %, and the pine-oak forest decreased 31.82 ha. Conclusions. The decrease in agricultural areas can be attributed to the aging of the population, the increase in temperature and irregular rainfall, as well as reforestation by government programs in the study area.
