| description | Sexual minority adolescents (SMA) in general, and Hispanic sexual minority adolescents (HSMA) in particular, report higher levels of substance use, HIV risk behaviors, and mental health problems, compared to their non-Hispanic White heterosexual and sexual minority peers. These outcomes are more prominent for SMA and HSMA who have parents that are unaccepting of their youth’s sexual orientation. A lack of parental acceptance of sexual orientation has been positively associated with substance use, condomless sex, and mental health problems. Lack of parent acceptance may initiate a process where families struggle to come to terms with their youth’s sexual identity, leading to poor family functioning. Given the importance of family for HSMA development, it is critical to accurately account for family functioning behaviors that are typically strong predictors of Hispanic adolescent health behaviors in HSMA. Measures of family functioning for HSMA need to account for the unique experiences of HSMA and their families, including the interplay of cultural values and individual level variables. Currently, there are no empirically tested measures of family-functioning specifically developed for HSMY. The main purpose of the described study is to develop a measure of family functioning for HSMA. We aim to (1) develop a preliminary measure of family functioning for HSMA through focus groups and a modified Delphi process with a panel of community partners and topical experts; and (2) assess the face validity of the developed measure of family functioning for HSMA through cognitive interviews and surveys with HSMA. |
