| description | The contribution explores the survival of the pastoral genre in manuscript, based on the English translation by Robert Tofte of a popular French pastoral by Nicholas de Montreux, Les bergeries de Juliette (1585), according to the testimony of an alphabetical commonplace book, MS 67 kept in the special collections of the McCormick Library at the Northwestern University. More precisely, the case study will look into how and why the quotations were copied by taking into account the larger context of the other sources in the manuscript, among them Florio’s Montaigne, Sidney’s Arcadia, Caxton’s Reynard the Foxe, and quite a few playbooks, including Shakespeare’s Pericles. |
