Summary:Abstract Accurate measles data is crucial for effective disease surveillance, outbreak response, and vaccination strategy formulation in India. However, data collection and analysis face significant challenges due to limitations in primary data sources, including the Health Management Information System (HMIS), the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Family Health Survey (NFHS), World Health Organization (WHO) surveillance data and the private healthcare system. However, these sources have their own demerits leading to substantially incomplete epidemiological information on epidemiological data on measles. Besides, current data predominantly focus on children under five, limiting the understanding of measles transmission among older age groups. To sustain measles elimination efforts, establishing a robust and mandatory reporting system, similar to the COVID-19 reporting framework, is essential for improving measles and other infectious disease surveillance.
