| Summary: | The city of Madrid of the 1930’s which witnessed the first steps of Opus Dei was the backdrop for great change. Firstly from the political point of view: the Monarchy had been replaced by the Republic; also the city itself was converted into an urban setting for a new era. Intellectuals and cultural life together with the new political class and the Press stirred up a whirlwind which absorbed all of the city dwellers regardless of class or background sometimes in spite of themselves. The Civil War worsened these problems in a city which was at once a battle front and a rear guard. |
