Description
Summary:The use of determiners represents one of the major difficulties for learners and non native speakers of French. Reference grammatical descriptions can be considered as partly responsible for this, as they imply that grammatical morphemes are endowed with precise meaning reflecting the characteristics of things in the real world. After reviewing the usual criteria used by the grammars to describe French articles, we set out the theoretical principles underlying our analysis, replacing the referential semantic view of language by a pragmatic and constructivist approach that aims to be genuinely “communicative”. After examining the general function of the determiner in French, we consider the cases of absence of determiner. We then put forward a contrastive analysis of definite, indefinite and partitive articles, using pragmatical criteria of “presupposition” and “particularisation”, which also turn out to be useful for analysing demonstrative determiner.
