Description
Summary:Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, affecting millions annually. Among the diverse spectrum of CVDs, Mönckeberg’s arteriosclerosis, a form of arterial calcification, poses unique challenges and clinical implications. This review delves into the distinctive features and clinical significance of Mönckeberg’s arteriosclerosis. Mönckeberg’s arteriosclerosis is characterized by calcium deposition within the arterial walls’ middle layer, leading to arterial stiffness without significant luminal occlusion. Although its etiology remains incompletely understood, it commonly accompanies conditions such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease. This systemic vascular disease contributes to various clinical manifestations, including peripheral ulcers and increased cardiovascular risk. Understanding the pathophysiology of Mönckeberg’s arteriosclerosis involves complex molecular mechanisms, including vascular smooth muscle cell osteogenic differentiation and dysregulation of calcification inhibitors. Diagnostic approaches typically include non-invasive imaging modalities like ankle-brachial index assessment and Doppler ultrasound. However, due to its diverse clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges, further research is imperative to elucidate its full spectrum and develop effective therapeutic strategies. In conclusion, Mönckeberg’s arteriosclerosis represents a significant clinical entity within the realm of cardiovascular diseases, necessitating comprehensive understanding and tailored management approaches to mitigate its impact on patient outcomes.
