description In a great majority of fantasy novels, rejection of power is one of the main feature of heroes: they shirk responsibility, they abandon their thrones, they refuse their titles and they disguise themselves as wandering knights. This pattern reveals our discomfort with the intrinsic violence of the medieval lord's power: this violence underlies a political, economic and symbolic domination of the society by the lords, which seems incompatible with contemporary representations of heroism. Fantasy faces a real dilemma: it represents both medieval universes and heroes who are our contemporaries by their attitude towards power and violence. This dilemma reflects our own relationship to power and violence
