Summary:This paper examines the pros and cons of using pair work in foreign language learning classes at Salahaddin University. The objective of the research is to determine the impact of working in pairs on students' preferences and to modify their attitudes toward the effects of using pairs in activities. For the academic year 2023–2024, a set of questionnaires was made and 47 students took part in it in the English Language department of Salahaddin University-Erbil College of Basic Education. Questionnaires and audio-recorded interviews were used to collect the data. Following an analysis of the survey responses, it was found that students' attitudes had improved and they were more positive about the pair work activities and were very interested in them. However, the main focus of this paper is on the pros, cons, and objectives of working pairs, as well as the challenges that students face when performing pair work activities. As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the students feel comfortable using a mix of pair work with small group discussions for language production. Therefore, the study found that pair work gives individual students more time and opportunity to use their own language, speak and share their own thoughts and ideas. Also, the student becomes more confident in their language learning and can manage their tasks on their own.
